Hero In Australia Saves A Sinking Kangaroo On Gold Coast
On Australia’s Gold Coast a strange but valiant life saving event took place where a passer by pulled a drowning kangaroo from the water.
Local surfer and general Exteme sports enthusiast Neil McCallum spotted an object out to sea that he had never seen before. It kept disappearing under the surface and moving very erratically. As he shielded his eyes to get a better look he saw that it was in fact an infant kangaroo that had bizarrely found its way quite a distance out to sea. Neil thought quickly and grabbing one of larger Surfboards out he went to see if he could help the poor creature.
The roo was pretty exhausted when he reached it. The strong currents and high waves had been sapping its energy for a while. An attempt was made by Neil to bring the kangaroo on the board with him but it kept struggling and ended up falling back off again. A number of people in kayaks were also in the area but not close enough to help. Neil decided to take another approach and got the kangaroo under one arm and paddled back into shore with the other. Although a little worse for ware, both Neil and the roo made it back onto solid ground.
Why the little kangaroo decided to head out to sea has yet to be explained by animal experts, however they have given him the name Ian, as a humorous tribute to swimming gold medalist Ian Thorpe. “Kangaroos are definitely not known for their swimming abilities” states Harry Kernel of the Queensland Nature Park. They very rarely even enter water above their knees he states, but maybe this one had never been taught that by its parents.
Ian the kangaroo has made a full recovery and is being looked after in a nearby shelter. He is due be let out shortly when everyone is happy and the release site is going to be around 40 miles inland. Neil refuses to take any praise for his actions, saying that anyone would have done the same if they had seen a helpless creature in trouble.
